h-9

on wednesdays, i tutor an 8th grade boy at a local middle school in cambridge; we’ll call him j.zor {credits to erin for the “zor”}. i am under the impression that he may in fact be the coolest kid ever.

reasoning: he has a mohawk {with detailing}, he is self-motivated and doesn’t make me nag him {too much}, he doesn’t judge me for liking sytycd, he concerns himself with my movie edification and has recommended I watch transformers 2 immediately, and the list continues.

now, i have to admit that we’ve had our rough patches. example, j.zor doesn’t bring homework binder thinking he can get out of homework. i was not born yesterday. and yes, we still practice math and our critical thinking, homework binder or no. but the real joy in every wednesday comes at a quarter till 7. because that’s when we get to play educational games. last night was battle ship.

it was epic.

i get off to a quick start and sink his carrier. he has a tough time locating my ships. i sink his battleship. i’m feeling good, but then j.zor makes a comeback! we’re both down to one ship {submarine and destroyer} and it’s seven o’clock. all the kids are antsy, and girls are coming over to get j.zor’s attention {because he is in fact the coolest kid there}.

a crowd forms. i -5. miss. a-2. miss. d-7. miss.

tension runs high.

h-9. it's a hit! the crowd goes wild.

thanks for a great game, j.zor! here's looking forward to scrabble {and practicing our square roots, of course}
