ni hao, kai-lan

i was recently in davis {my hometown} for the holidays.  the big news in davis was the opening of a target.  needless to say, the town was in an uproar.  i joined the hype and visited frequently.  on one of these trips, i went with my mother to check out the post christmas sales.  and oh what a gem i found.

meet kai-lan.  she may be the scariest toy i have ever encountered.  please note the adoring stare she is giving my mother.  the blue heart means she feels sad.  i make kai-lan feel happy.  i know this because she told me.  and her heart turned yellow.  kai-lan makes me feel like throwing up.

the toy section was littered with kai-lan, her existence cheapened by the screaming 15% off signs.   isles upon isle of kai-lan, all singing to me and trying to teach me the word for “grandfather” in chinese {ye ye for paternal grandfather, in case you were wondering}.

i did not get the joy of taking kai-lan home with me because even at 15% off, she was still $30.  i’m sure kai-lan would feel angry if she new i thought she was not worth $30.  after leaving target, kai-lan’s haunting voice stayed with me.  perhaps i judged her too soon.
