i got sick today. this threw a wrench in my weekend plans. mainly: an awesome birthday party. do I feel like a 3rd grader that can’t go to her friend’s birthday party, at which there would be balloons and pony rides, because of a runny nose? yes. i most absolutely feel that way.
so instead, i’m curled up in many warm blankets and afghans with the humidifier running {don’t worry, mom, only hydration and rest this weekend!} about to read. but what to read?! i have recently been on a huge science fiction kick, or as margaret atwood would describe her works, “speculative fiction.” think surrogates {which i watched earlier this evening. check plus on the dejong rating system}, ai, the road, etc. I just finished reading the year of the flood, second in the MaddAddam trilogy by margaret atwood {thanks to meg for her life altering literary suggestions}. tonight doesn’t seem like the right time to start the d.h. lawrence i had my eye on-- no, it’s a night for an “old friend” type of book. lucky for me, meg-o {roommate} brought home some delightful second hand finds after work today; included in the pile was nora ephron, just dying to tell me about her neck! that’s right, tonight is a night for me and nora. she’ll say “honey, before starting this next chapter, why don’t you get some more tea?” i’ll reply “oh, how thoughtful! you keep me sane, nora. you keep me sane!” and then she will make me laugh with her stories about real estate in new york. then she will tell me about her divorce. then, if i'm lucky, she'll give me some advice on life. and all these things will make me ponder. and then i will fall asleep.
if you haven’t read i feel bad about my neck, you should. i’ll leave you with some of nora’s words of wisdom:
“the reason you’re waking up in the middle of the night is the second glass of wine”
“whenever someone says the words ‘our friendship is more important than this,’ watch out because it almost never is”
“never let them know”
“if only one third of your clothes are mistakes, you’re ahead of the game”
